Treskavica
Treskavica (2088m) is located 30 km away from Sarajevo and offers unique alpine experience. With 2088 meters above the sea level, it is the highest Sarajevo mountain, and only 300meters lower than the highest peak in the country, Maglić.
Mountain lakes, as well as the strong contrasts between lush vegetation and complete barrenness, make Treskavica one of the most beautiful mountains in the region. The largest and most beautiful of the five glacial lakes is Veliko Jezero, 220 meters long, 185 meters wide, and 6 meters deep, and is located at an altitude of 1548 meters above sea level.
It is precisely the numerous springs and lakes that set Treskavica apart from other mountains. According to legend, Treskavica has as many as 365 springs, including the springs of five large rivers, the Željeznica, Bistrica, Ljuta, Bijela, and Rakitnica. There are also lakes Platno, Crno, Bijelo, and Zmijsko Jezero, as well as Turov Stan, Kućare, Trokunsko, Gornja Bara, and Simovića Bara. The first five lakes are of glacial origin, are located above 1500 meters above sea level, and represent the most distinct traces of the Ice Age on this mountain. They represent valuable ecosystems with specific flora and fauna.
Crystal clear lake water and untouched surroundings offer unforgettable moments, especially on hot summer days when the view stretches all the way to Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea.
Mountaineering
The village of Turovi – Black Lake
Length: 19 km
The most convenient access to Treskavica is from the village of Turovi, four kilometers away from Trnovo. The road is macadam and marked, and is not suitable for cars. It is best to leave the car in Turovi. After an hour’s hike, you will reach the Sustvac mountain house. The house is open on weekends, and with notice also at other times.
Treskavica was the scene of major battles during the last war and has not yet been demined. However, on the route leading to the lake, there are no mines at all, and the road is well marked and it is very difficult to get lost.
The road from Sustavac leads further towards the Great Lake past the former mountain lodge of Josip Sigmund on Kozja luka, and slowly becomes more and more difficult and narrow. It takes about an hour and a half to walk to the Great Lake. Some 700 meters further, after a steep ascent, at 1675 meters above sea level, is the Black Lake.
