Handball in Sarajevo is third popular sport.
This sport got its importance in Sarajevo mainly after the clubs named RK Bosna and RK Željezničar were formed.
Firstly, RK Bosna was formed in 1948. RK Bosna was part of a family named University-Sport Society Bosna.
Secondly RK Željezničar as well was formed few years after the World War II.
The handball in Sarajevo was played with great passion, and especially during the times of great successes of RK Bosna and other Bosnia and Herzegovina teams.
Handball Club Bosna did not have many successes during the time of Yugoslavia, except the 1962/1963 when the club won the Cup of Yugoslavia, and 1965/1966 when the club had been the finalist of the same Cup.
On the other side RK Željezničar is one of rare handball clubs from Bosnia and Herzegovina that won Yugoslavia national league. The major success happened in season 1978, along the finals of EHF European Cup, where Željezničar lost to German Gummersbach.
At the time, the major Bosnia and Herzegovina handball team was Borac from Banjaluka, which had won 7 Yugoslavia national championships.
The years that followed after the aggression 1992 – 1995, RK Bosna had some greater achievements, which today make it one of the most successful Bosnia and Herzegovina teams.
Željezničar itself cannot speak of some major achievements in the years that came along.
