Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God

Built between 1863 and 1872, this three-part basilica has five domes in the Byzantine style with the baroque bell tower. The contractor-builder was Andrija Damjanov (1813-1878), noted for the so-called Andrija’s crosses, by means of which constructions of complex baroque domes, of which this in one example, was possible.

The construction itself took five years (1863-1868) and it was consecrated in 1872, during the governing of the Bosnian vilajet (region) by Osman Pasha. The Russian Tsar made a significant contribution, and the Ottoman Sultan added a donation of 500 gold ducats to make possible the building of this temple. To the north-east of this Orthodox cathedral, the Orthodox theological seminary was built at the time of the Austro-Hungarian administration, along the area, which borders from the north with Ferhadija Street and from the east with Štrosmajerova street, as four-story building in what is known as the secession style.

After World War II, it was used by the Architectural-Civil Engineering Faculty, and in the sixties an atrium was added form the west side, according to the design of the architect Jovan Korka.

Currently, the faculty of Economics is located in this religious educational building, and the ground floor is used for privates leaseholders. During the siege, this cathedral and the theological seminary were damaged by the numerous shells fired by those laying siege to the city from the hills.

In 1999, damage to the theological seminary was repaired, with significant donations of funds for its restoration donated by the Greek government.
