Sarajevo is a city where world four major religions meet, and together, live a life made of, harmony, peace and tolerance.

Sarajevo temples are not as those which you would find in metropolises worldwide, as gorgeous or famous, but it is still unique and universal for its temples of four world religions. In order to emphasize that universality, Sarajevo could be compared to ancient Jerusalem, although in Jerusalem, there are impassable wall barriers between Jewish Wailing Wall and Islamic Al Aqsa and Al Quds. In Sarajevo, like nowhere else, that is not a case, no walls no barriers between temples, so that is why this unique and harmonious city is one of its kind.

These temples, and architecture in general as well, are reflection of total human understanding and conception.

Their existence next to each other and survival up to date confirms the unity of religious contrasts, which was literary unthinkable, especially in the middle ages.

Today if you walk the old part of Sarajevo, Baščaršija, you would be amazed to find that only in the range of 100 – 200 meters you would be able to see Gazi Husref Bey's Mosque and its complex, as most significant piece of Islamic architecture in Sarajevo, the Old Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Mikhail and Gabriel, which is a structure of unknown date of creation, and a monument of design that is not common to Orthodox architectural style, Cathedral of the Hearth of Jesus, as the most significant monument of Christianity in Sarajevo, and The Old or New Jewish temple, which are the oldest and most significant monuments of Jewish presence in Sarajevo.

In Sarajevo, temples were exclusively built on charitable basis, not only among the Moslems but also other confessions.

For something like that, European middle age platitude: “The one who owns the state owns the religion too.”, was not a scenario here.

Besides that, the benefactors could appear in free and guaranteed craft and trade businesses. These conditions were set by the Ottoman arrival. Since then, instead of middle-age establishment donjons and burgs, open cities appear in which mass crafts and trade were able to develop, so the people enriched by that became Maecenas and benefactors in building sacral buildings.

This is the way old Sarajevo was founded with its rich old part, Baščaršija, which gave benefactors of all four religions of the world, who thorough their temples overcame the contrasts and thereby became the symbol of benevolence and tolerance.

Of course, these are not the only monuments in Sarajevo, there is a large number of others around the city, which are most definitely, not less important, since every one of them has a story, story that speaks about Sarajevo, the only place in the world where tolerance, peace and harmony, ideas of ideal are most beautifully spoken.
